MATCH REPORT - SELKENT LEAGUE (Spring): JR Spartans vs Danson White - 7th April 13 (Home)

07/04/2013 16:42

After four weeks without a game due to the weather and a break for Easter, we were back in action at the Marathon Ground. On a beautiful sunny morning we faced Danson White again who we drew 0 -0 against in the League Vase competition just after Christmas.  With only seven palyers available, the squad was Ben (Golakeeper), Finlay Captain (Left Back), Taran (Right Back), Lovell (Left Midfield), Jack (Centre Midfield), William (Right Midfield) and Callum (Striker).

The boys began the game well with plenty of possesion and pressure on Danson's goal. Lovell had some great runs down the left hand wing, but just couldn't get the final ball into the box.  Given the wet weather the pitch was quite hard which meant the ball was running very fast across the pitch which caught the boys out at times. On the 10 minute mark, Jack was on the edge of the "D" and put a lovely ball through to Callum who's shot smashed off the left hand post. On the 21st minute a rare Danson attack saw us play a brilliant passing move between Finlay and Taran at the back, which then played in William on the right hand side who then played in Jack, only for Jack's shot to go inches wide of the post (a great passing move from defense to attack guys :-)).  Ben was pretty much untroubled in goal, as I can't remember a single shot at our goal in the first half. With the final minutes of the first half ticking away Jack wins a free kick just to the right hand side of our opponents penalty area. Jack takes the free kick and passes to Callum in the box who's shot just goes curling over the bar (great effort). Callum goes close again seconds later after a throw in on the left, which finds Lovell who passes into Callum but his shot just goes wide of the post.

Half Time Score : Junior Reds Spartans - 0, Danson White - 0

At half time the boys are told to continue as they have been, the goals will come given the amount of possesion and opportunities we have had.

One change is made with Ugo taking over on the right wing from William. We carry on as we did in the first half with the boys putting alot of pressure onto Danson White, but we just can't find that elusive goal. With Lovell and Callum creating some great runs again down the left wing with great support work from Finlay at left back, the boys create a number of chances. With 17 minutes gone great work by Ugo and Jack on the right provides a pass to Callum whose shot is saved by the Danson keeper only for him to spill the ball, but unfortunately Lovell just couldn't quite wrap his foot around the ball to steer it into the net.  Danson started to put some pressure onto us towards the end of the second half with several break away chances, but with Taran's strength and Finlay covering in behind, Ben wasn't troubled too much by the Danson strikers. Due to an injury Jack comes off and is replaced with William with 7 minutes left of the second half. William is asked to cover the left hand wing and Lovell drops back into the central midfield postion. With 22 minutes of the second half gone the ball finds its way to Callum who once again sees his shot rebound of the upright only to be cleared by the Danson defense. With the last seconds of the game ticking by, Callum again has another shot at goal only, to see his shot hit the side netting.

Managers Comment: A great game to watch, but a frustrating one too. With so much possesion and with us hitting the woodwork twice this was definately a game that got away from us. That said we didn't lose, which means another point gained in the league. It was also another clean sheet which is a big positive to take from the game. This means in the last four league games we have only conceded 2 goals (That's one of the best defensive records in the league). There was also some great passing in all areas of the squad and I'm also seeing some players using the ball control we practice at training which is fantasic. The more you train the more we can introduce these techniques into the game. After 5 games of the Spring season we are now on 6 points, which was our total points tally for the whole of the Autumn season.

A big thanks goes to William for supporting with the match card again. Cheers William.
