MATCH REPORT - SELKENT LEAGUE VASE COMPETITION - 2nd Mar 14

15/03/2014 17:43

This week we played in the league vase competition where we faced two games.
Our first match saw us drawn against Our Lady's Youth. A league D side who are showing some good early form based on their league position.
Unfortunately due to hand injury during the warm up we lost our keeper Jake and Jack kindly agreed to go between the sticks.
Our starting line up was therefore Jack (gk), George, Kaci, Taran, Alfie, Ben and Callum
We took immediate control of the game and showed good control and passing right from the back and through the midfield. We scored twice in the first half through Callum and Ben.
Half Time Score: Our Lady's Youth -0,JR Spartans - 2

The boys were told to continue the good work in the second half.
As ever changes were made to ensure everyone played in the game. Jake recovered from his injury and went into goal, Jack replaced Taran, Shemar came on for George, Kaci swapped with Finlay, Lovell was on for Ben and William replaced Callum.
The lads continued the hard work shown in the first half. Our opponents put up a tough fight in the second half but they couldn't break down our defence. As a consequence it was a pretty even half with neither side scoring.
Full Time Score: Our Lady's Youth - 0, JR Spartans - 2

Captain - Alfie
Man of the Match - Callum

Our second game was a harder test as our opponents Sidcup Spartak Blue were from league A. The starting line up for the first half was Jake (gk), George, Finlay, Taran, Lovell, Ben and Callum. The boys were clearly going to be up against it as the team in orange passed the ball comfortably around the park. We defended bravely and prevented chance after chance with some great saves made by Jake.
Half Time Score: JR Spartans - 0,
Sidcup Spartak Blue - 0

In the second half the boys were changed so all the subs played in the game. Given how well the first half had gone I was keen that we kept it tight at the back. Shemar came on for George, Lovell made way for Alfie, Kaci stepped in for Ben, Jack replaced Taran and William swapped with Callum. We experienced more of the same with Sidcup keeping us pretty much camped in our own half for most of the second period. We weathered the storm and battled hard and thanks to two fantastic saves from Jake we achieved a well deserved draw.

Manager's comment:
A brilliant performance, particularly pleasing was the result against Sidcup. We really showed great character with ever boy defending with all their heart and soul. Overall a win and a draw, with no goals conceded was a great result. It was a shame the final game between our two opponents finished 7-1 to Sidcup, meaning we lost out on going through to the next round on goal difference. Let's take this positive attitude and approach back into our league fixtures. Well done everyone COYS!!
